YOUNG CARERS

Handsworth Grange Community Sports College has achieved the Bronze Award from the Carers' Trust for the work we do in identifying and supporting our Young Carers.

Young Carers

We actively work to identify and support any new Young Carers in Year 7. Each Year 7 pupil is asked to complete a Caring Questionnaire, and pupils identified as Young Carers from this questionnaire will be offered extra support in school if needed.

We have many fantastic and dedicated young people in our school who work selflessly and tirelessly to support and care for family members with long‑term health issues.

If you have, or know of, any pupil who gives extra support in your family, you may contact us: 0114 269 4801 ext. 2255

We are here to help, not to judge.

What a Young Carer Is

  • A young carer is a child or young person who looks after, or helps to look after, someone in their family who:
  • is physically ill or has a long‑term health condition
  • has a mental health problem
  • has a disability
  • has a drug or alcohol problem

How We Identify Young Carers

We actively work to identify and support any new Young Carers in Year 7 through a Caring Questionnaire. Pupils identified as Young Carers will be offered extra support in school if needed. We also review and identify Young Carers from any year group throughout the school year:

  • at the point of admission
  • if we receive information
  • or if we have reason to believe a young person may be a young carer
  • A child can become a young carer at any point, and caring responsibilities can increase or decrease over time.

Support Available for Young Carers

Young Carers can choose whether or not they access support. This support is unique to each young person and can be tailored to meet their needs.

All staff are aware of who our Young Carers are so that we can offer appropriate support and understand the complexities they may face.

We can make reasonable adjustments for Young Carers who require it.

Young Carers Needs Assessment

Since April 2015, all Young Carers are entitled to an assessment of their needs from the local authority.

If a young carer wishes to undertake an assessment, Rochelle Roberts will support them in making a referral to the Young Carers Needs Assessment Team (YCAT), who will carry out the assessment.

Once YCAT has completed the assessment, they will refer the young carer to support services to help them and their families. This may include:

  • Sheffield Young Carers
  • Other services that can best meet their needs

Young Carers Drop‑In

Rochelle Roberts (Young Carers Lead) holds a monthly Young Carers drop‑in, offering a chance for young carers to get together and spend time with one another after school.
